About the Painting
For the past year, "Unbound" has hovered above Joe Kirby's piano in his studio, a muse overseeing his artistic journey.
Minimalistic and evocative, Sharp's use of bold colours and fluid brushstrokes create a sense of movement and energy within her paintings. "Unbound'' echoes the abstract brilliance of Wilhelmina Barns-Graham's 'Rhythm and Geometric' series. It encapsulates an aura that profoundly envelops and captivates the viewer.
Reflecting on Sharp's painting, Kirby stated;
'You know that sensation of lifting someone in a swimming pool, how they feel effortlessly light? That's the feeling I get when I look at this painting. A gentle ease flows through me, inspiring my compositions.
About the Artist
Kitty Sharp holds a Bachelor of Arts with First Class Honours in Fine Art from Newcastle University, and recently completed an exchange program studying Painting at Concordia University in Montreal. Her practice explores the relationship between sound and visual art through synesthesia, where music, colour, and composition merge seamlessly.
After listening to Kirby’s 2023 album Overgrown, Sharp was inspired to create Unbound. Just months later, Kirby acquired the work, and it has since become an integral part of his creative environment. Proudly featured in his music videos, Unbound now stands as a signature piece in his studio, continually inspiring his process.

About the Painting
Trees was created in direct response to Joe Kirby’s track of the same name, through Kitty Sharp’s experience of synesthesia — a blending of the senses where sound becomes colour, shape, and texture. As the song unfolded, she translated its tones, harmonies, and rhythms into shifting greens, earthy browns, and light-filled spaces on the canvas.
The result is a visual interpretation of music: layered, organic, and alive. Viewers can almost feel the sway of branches and hear the rustle of leaves within its brushstrokes. This deep connection to a single piece of music led to Trees being chosen as the album artwork for its release, cementing the bond between sound and vision.
